Moving
from one location to another can be a tough job.
To help you move, we have listed some hints that are designed to
help organize this mammoth task.

- Make
a list of everything to be moved; estimate number of packing cartons
and buy them.
- Call
movers for estimates.
- Consider
insurance on moveables.
- Gather
and pack dental, medical and veterinary records; ask health care providers
for professional referrals.
- Pick
up change of address moving kit from the Post Office.
- Contact
children's schools and have transcripts forwarded.
- Close
area charge accounts and arrange bills forwarded.
- Request
that your credit bureau file be transferred.
- Ask
your employer to forward W-2 and tax documents.
- For
tax purposes, make a record of all moving expenses, including items
donated to charity.
- Arrange
for disconnection of utilities and reconnection at new location.
- If your
car or other possessions are not fully paid for, notify lending facility
if you are moving them out of state.

- Pack
one room at a time.
- Check
to see if large appliances need to be prepared for moving.
- If car
is to be towed, arrange for tow bar.
- Arrange
transfer of important documents and fine jewelry.
- Arrange
cancellation of newspaper and other home deliveries.
- Ask
bank to release safe deposit box and transfer accounts to new bank.
- Arrange
for cash, travelers checks or certified checks (movers usually require
cash or certified check).
- Drain
gasoline from lawn mower and dispose of flammable items.
- Isolate
items to be moved in your car.
- Arrange
to have phone disconnected; find out if you can take phones with you
and ask about credits for phones at new location.
- Transfer
insurance so you will be covered at your new home.
- Make
hotel reservations if necessary.
- Pack
suitcase you can live out of for three days in your new home; include
a first-aid kit with daily medications.
- Empty
and defrost refrigerator and freezer and let them air dry for a day;
deodorize large appliances with baking soda or coffee.
- Remember
to leave keys to your old property with appropriate person.
- Pack
your phone book for future reference.
- Give
driver directions
to new address.
- After
van is packed and weighed, determine final moving bill; make sure
you have payment ready before van is unloaded at new address.
- Confirm
arrival date and time.
- Sign
and save copies of bill of loading.
- Give
mover address of place you can be reached en route to your new home.
- Check
every room, closet and attic a final time; check locks on doors and
windows.
- Pack
vacuum last so you can reach it easily to clean your new home.
- Be on
hand for unloading to supervise placement of your furniture and packed
boxes.
- Inventory
belongings and make notes of missing or damaged items.
- Check
electrical wiring, fuses and water turn-off valve.
- Start
newspaper and other home deliveries.
- Arrange
for a safe deposit box.
- Have
your will reviewed if you have moved out of state in which was drawn.
- Enjoy
your new home!
